Parie Leung Watterson paints and draws musings, animals, wondering thoughts and the awkward, imperfect condition of being human. She is interested in the hidden, unspoken, and unexpressed – inner life, tensions within the self, with others, with one’s place in the world. Her works also explore the relationship between people and animals - how the former relate to and connect with the latter, and the emotional bonds that arise. The emotions she explores are subtle, mixed and often not easy to define. She gathers inspiration from observation, memory, books, cinema, daily interactions, news media, cultural memes, found and personal photographs and sketches from life and imagination. The titles of her pieces frequently add another dimension - these may invite further empathetic engagement or reflection.
Parie works primarily in acrylic, oil, ink and watercolour, on small to medium panels, as well as on paper and larger canvases. She also does monotype printmaking. Her compositions range from surreal depictions and portraits, to an experimental approach that combines the figurative and the abstract.
