Meera Palia

Meera Palia Brent web Instagram

Having always been attracted to spontaneity and improvisation in art forms, Meera's work embodies a strong need to create abstract art that feels ‘free’ and made ‘in the moment’. Her paintings are therefore unplanned, evolving out of the colours, textures, marks and moods that emerge throughout the process and whatever emotions or thoughts she is carrying with her at the time. Working mainly in acrylics but with a mixed media approach, Meera aims for the painting equivalent of a jazz jam or a flamenco improvisation, prioritising spontaneity, authenticity and freedom in mark-making overachieving a polished composition/choreographed act. In this sense, Meera is most proud of her work when it retains a raw and open-ended, unfinished quality that embraces uncertainty, imperfections and the energy of the process.

Inspired by the rhythmic, gestural, physical act of painting -when it feels like her hand is freestyle dancing- Meera will also often paint to music, bringing its energy, syncopation, and movement into her work.

Meera sees painting as an enquiry, a dialogue with the unknown. She enjoys being surprised by what happens in front of her and sees each piece as a unique event. Recognisable ‘forms’ such as figures or landscapes may or may not emerge and it is this sense of the unexpected that Meera finds so compelling.

Meera Palia (b.1978, London) is a largely self-taught, abstract expressionist artist based in London. She began painting intuitively in her spare time alongside a career teaching sociology and philosophy, discovering her love for abstract art through experimentation on informal adult education courses. Meera has a mixed media approach using mostly acrylic paint, oil pastel and collage to produce spontaneous, expressive, playful and colourful work.

Meera is a member of All She Makes (curated online directory for women creatives worldwide) and has been selected by Contemporary Art Collectors for inclusion in their upcoming book highlighting emerging artists to art collectors worldwide.
